Five Tips for Remote Work

Five Tips for Remote Work

So, you've joined the remote work force! More and more people every day are ditching the office digs and adopting the remote work lifestyle. Whether you work from home, a coworking space, or consider yourself a "digital nomad" these five tips will help keep you on track and ensure your success as a remote worker.

1. Communication

Communication is key when working remotely. Don’t be afraid of “over communicating.” It’s better to over communicate than to expect or assume what your coworkers or superiors expect from you in any role or task. At Bevy we use Slack for all written communications - both work related and non - and have regular team Zoom meetings. On this team, we feel confident conveying our questions and concerns to any one on the team whenever we need.

2. Work/Life balance

This one is really important when working remotely. When working a traditional office job, there is a clear end to your day: there is a workspace and perhaps a commute, that marks the end of your work day, and that helps separate your work life and your home life. When working remotely, it is important you give yourself the opportunity to “sign off” and ‘leave the office’ for the day. Maybe that means you set up a home office, or you have a separate computer for work. Whatever the solution for you, it is important to create that balance. Rest is important for you to be productive!

3. Get to know your coworkers

One thing that can feel like it’s missing when working for a company remotely, is the camaraderie of an office environment. When working remotely, there is no water cooler to hang out by, no bulletin board on which to post inspirational quotes, no happy hour after work on Friday. It is key to get to know your coworkers outside of work too. Make personal connections by asking individuals how their weekend was. Inspire a conversation among the team by sharing an interesting article you read. Share the funny meme that cracked you up this morning. At Bevy, we created a bookclub! Even something as simple as this, makes us feel closer together.

4. You’re not alone

When working remotely it is easy to feel a bit lonely, especially when you are unsure of how to do something, or feel uncomfortable with a task. One important key to working on a successful remote team is to rely on each other. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know,” and ask for help. Remember, you are not standing in this world alone, you have a team that supports, respects, and is inspired by you.

5. Hold yourself accountable

If you think, “working remotely? How do you motivate yourself to get anything done?” remote work is probably not for you. You must be a self-starter, and problem-solver. You must be able to give yourself tasks and see that they are completed. Nobody will be there, standing at your desk to give you a pat on the back. You are responsible for your work, for proving your work, and for being able to demonstrate what it is you are doing.
