How Udemy Brings Value to the Company using Community

Episode 15

On the C2C Podcast, Episode 15, we welcome James Dunbar, Senior Manager of Community Programs & Strategy at Udemy. With over 24 million students and over 100,000 courses, the Udemy community team has their hands full. James shared with us how Udemy views community and supports their huge base of online instructors.

The instructors on Udemy are key to the company’s success. Without the incredible number and huge variety of courses, there would be no Udemy. That’s why the company has focused their community efforts to support the instructors.

What we’ve seen over all the episodes of The C2C Podcast is the most successful (and most funded) community programs always tie back to business goals. James shared a way of accomplishing this, a strategy new to the Podcast. Most community teams use metrics like revenue, churn, and customer support requests. Of course, with the many variables that go into making those metrics improve, the needs of the sales, customer support, and other departments aren’t always the same. James' strategy begins with a simple step: a coffee. James takes the time to meet with key people in each department to ask them, “what are some problems you are running into right now?” to see if the community can help.

After talking with the person in charge of Social strategy, he discovered she needed help creating more content. So, James turned to the community to help create user generated content. Needless to say, it was a huge success. This method is fairly manual but it allows the community team to change it's focus if the company has new opportunities arise.
